At 1ère Position (Search Marketing Agency in France), all starts during a test campaign on Google Adwords with the keyword “Second Life”. We are the January 7, 2007 and the presenter of the most famous TV news show in France announces a subject about second life on TF1.

To show a customer that TV campaign could generates in the minutes following the diffusion on TV a peak of research in Google, I launch an Adwords campaign immediately around the word second life.

The campaign starts and receives a peak of traffic during a few hours: 18.000 research about second life. Up to now nothing really surprising, it was the goal to make a live demonstration and I had all the numbers to show to the customer the impact of a synchronization of a TV campaign, especially in prime-time, with the launching of an Adwords campaign on the associated topics.

The more surprising starts from here: After 1-2 hours, whereas I regularly made of F5 to refresh the page of results and check the diffusion and the budget of the sponsored links, I see under my eyes that Google changed the order of the organic results while making go up rightly, one of the most relevant website on the subject.

Would Google be able to adapt in real time the organic results to make go up the most relevant sites ? It is at this stage the question that I pose on the Taggle french forum in March 2007.

At the time, we all thought that it is may due to an update of a data center that I used, or a posting personalized with the history of research via the login to a service Google, Gmail or others.

Then comes a meeting with a reliable source which tells me between two other very interesting things, that during a official visit in Mountain View in Googleplex, an Google engineer speaks to him more freely and indicates that Google is from now able to recompute the whole of the data base of the engine in… 14 minutes! My intuition then starts to be transformed gradually into conviction.

Until this July 17, 2007 when I publish a new post on a personal blog, I note amazed that less than one hour after the publication of this post, Google already crawls and displays a result whereas there was not front, 0 result. Only the home of the blog was updated in Google then few hours later the completely indexed post and ranked. The expression used was: twitter fg/f1jxq and the blog: http://www.passion-radio.org/.

I specify that I was not logged under a Google account, Gmail or other and I used Customize Google who protects the data and historical send to Google, AND I use for this test a domain bought 2 months ago and with no PageRank.

Incredible, Google is henceforth able to crawl and rank in real time all results and change search engine ranking pages within one hour.

Only by writing it and although having noted it my own eyes, I remain amazed and disconcerted by the calculate power required by Google to do such a great job! Google seems to like to set up important changes during the summer holidays to test new things more discreetly.

Have nice holidays, we keep an open eye ; -) Who knows, Google may prepares for summer an algorithm update to rank in the next future website depending of the weather conditions…
